MEET THE ARTISTS

We work with talented, professional and dedicated freelance visual artists and creative writers. Our artists are very much part of the Ignite family and are specifically recruited into our  freelance pool that receives regular work, training, support and networking opportunities.

What we offer our artist pool:

  • Structured and full induction process.

  • Regular artist callouts with work opportunities, varying in scale and size with a fair selection process.

  • Project Coordination and support throughout all work.

  • Opportunity to work with other artists and partner organisations with different specialisms.

  • Regular artist meetups offering networking opportunities, relevant city and sector updates, and opportunity to generate ideas.

  • Regular programme of paid compulsory training such as safeguarding and facilitation skills. We also create an annual programme of training and events that artists can attend if of interest to their personal and professional development such as strategic away days.

  • Workshop rates of pay £33/hr for delivery (including set up and take down time) and £20/hour for planning. We also occasionally run more commission based projects where the fees reflect the demands of the whole project rather than an hourly rate.

  • Travel costs are also covered for any travel 2 miles from artists homes, capped at £8.80 per day.

My favourite project:

"I ran a weekly session in a local school with their ‘Balance Ambassadors’ exploring the importance of health and wellbeing. At the end of the project, the group developed plans, a presentation and shared their findings with the rest of the school and with local organisations leading to the creation of a follow-up project designing a health and wellbeing resource."

"'What Makes me, me' was my favourite. I ran weekly workshops with 8 children and their families at Crystal Peaks Library, using the theme 'What Makes me, me'.

We had fun exploring a wide range of media, creating a giant map, self-portraits and postcards for exhibition. It was fantastic to see the group grow in confidence."

"My favourite moment is definitely my recent project, Illuminating Experiences, an installation using illuminated 3D artworks and projection animation. The highlight has to be showing primary school children how to construct 3D houses using willow, tissue paper, PVA glue and using them in the installation. Although creating the houses was challenging for the children, it also showed them what they can achieve when they work together raising self-confidence and self-esteem."

"My favourite project with Ignite: working in a school and introducing 8-year-olds to a range of textile art materials and techniques, including using sewing machines. The children each made a piece of textile art that I then created a patchwork from to hang on the school wall."

"Art at the heart was inspired by older peoples responses to the Covid19 pandemic and I was able to create large scale abstract paintings to articulate how people felt which was amazing to connect with the community and share creativity."

"The most recent work was painting my largest mural to date in Sharrow for the project Art At The Heart. As I was painting my old neighbours, friends and people from the community shared their stories with me and were delighted with the cheerful colours brightening up the space. Even though this project was challenging the response and interaction from the community is the reason I love working with Ignite within our communities."

"Stencilling workshops at The Art House & Western Park Museum, inspired by the Painted Fabrics story, working with adults living with long term mental health difficulties. It was a privilege to see their confidence grow over the project enough to arrange at the end, a multimedia creative presentation & event selling their own art."

"A project that I enjoyed working on was the artwork “Alphabet – say hello” for Darnall Primary Care Centre. After consultation with local patient groups about a subject for the artwork, the designs for each of the hands in the British Sign Language alphabet art work were created by pupils from Greenlands Primary School. Each child designed a particular hand which was then cut in steel and added to the sculpture. The sculptural supports for the hands were then designed and developed with the help of women from Darnall Wellbeing."

My favourite project:

"I ran a workshop exploring intergenerational trauma and interdisciplinary practice influenced by the Special Collections Archives from my poetry residency at Manchester Metropolitan University, working with vulnerable adults across all ages. We fused photography, sculpture and writing together to investigate different facets of trauma and how it shapes/rebuilds identity. The workshop forged lasting friendships and creative relationships."

"I have loved working with Cystic Fibrosis Patients at Nottingham University Hospital to bring their stories to life through illustrations, animations, and a mural. Learning about the condition has opened my eyes to the emotions as well as physical difficulties associated, and helped inform how I delivered workshops in a sensitive manner."

"Adopt a Care Home - Local school children coming into Care Homes and creating artworks alongside the residents using different themes. You could see the joy and happiness it would bring, especially to the residents. They would all help each other with their projects & chat whilst doing so. It was so heartwarming to watch & be involved."

"The Sacred Spaces project in the Abbeydale Corridor where I worked with young people to interview people and photograph their community to explore what locals loved and what they wanted changing. They then created collages reflecting their findings and developed their ideas of what they would put into practice to improve their community. Loads of fun and energy and a brilliant practical outcome at the end!"

This is a gentle and nurturing space where people come for the opportunity to develop their creative skills and discover those they didn’t realise they had! The positive feedback from those who come, as to how much the space gives them in terms of enjoyment and the opportunity to play and explore is heartwarming."

"A favourite project for me has been a collaboration to make festival site art: 'Metaphorical Birds'. Participants first wrote a ribbon poem that described their metaphorical bird and then made a colourful bird out of a drinks can. We tied the ribbon poems to the birds and then strung the birds together and hung them in the bushes for the festival weekend."

"Working with the community on a piece of public art that involved zoom workshops (in lockdown) and resulted in a beautiful piece of projection art. The projection was mapped out onto a cylindrical railway ventilation shaft in the centre of Clay Cross, Chesterfield. This piece was created by artists and community members and demonstrates that even in a time of restrictions art can still thrive and empower communities and individuals."

"Inside Out was a photography project I worked on over the last year, engaging people in doorstep conversations about their experiences of lockdown with a particular focus on how our interactions with Inside and Outside spaces had changed. I worked with the local community of Sharrow, using photography as a way to connect with people and share individual stories."
